As soon as Brian, our hardware guru, returned from Iraq serving our country he got to work on this project serving us.
The goal was to speed up or servers, accommodating our growth, and also make them as big and fast as our limited budget would allow.
2X faster server!
We now have two dual pentium server machines as our engine.
3X faster pipe!
We tripled our upstream speed while improving the Red and Black Cafes wifi service to 28X faster. Wow!

Here's the really cool part. We set all this up in an old milk fridge right in the middle of an old bakery. It has to be the first server farm run out of a milk fridge.
New space with room to grow!

Here's just one example of how doing web outreach can really help your business:

On July 11th we saw that Oregon Art Beat was holding an online vote, asking viewers to select their favorite segments from a list of past Art Beat shows. The winning segments would be rebroadcast on OPB. So that day we posted a news item on Reggie Houston's website telling people to vote for Reggie and giving them a link to OPB's online vote. Within a week Reggie got a call from Oregon Art Beat telling him that votes had been pouring in and they'd be rebroadcasting his segment not once, but twice in August! And on both of those days Reggie's website saw a huge increase in traffic.

This is just one small example of the power of web outreach. Marketing events and merchandise to appropriate online communities and resources takes a bit of time, but no money at all. And for small businesses on a tight budget, there's no better way to get the word out!

Interface, interface, interface!
To truly be useful, the interface to a tool or function has to be designed as to be nearly transparent to your work. The tool needs to stay out of the way of your work as much as possible. From the Apple iPod, Google, the computer mouse and even your browser of choice, one does not look far to find an example that proves this statement.

We have taken this axiom and applied it to the whole abstraction that is your information management needs. With an integrated set of very simple interfaces, you can energize your business with very powerful internet services. Similar interfaces allow you and anyone you specify to manage content, digital assets, tasks and events, and contact information quickly and easily.

By using this single interface, you create a very powerful generic data set which can be instantly put to work for your company.
Automatically grow and manage your client-base.
Automatically update your public and private websites and other media like online and printed public calendars.
Automatically track trends, determine the value of marketing efforts, and gauge website efforts to help you make business decisions.
Automatically create a history of your tasks, announcements, and events.
Provide private websites for subgroups of your client-base like street-teams benefits, subscriber areas, or password-protected client information centers etc.

On your public web site you can:
Instantly offer digital assets for download or online merchandise for purchase.
Provide a dynamic calendar of public interest.
Provide subsets of your generic data set as photo galleries, bios, or any grouping category that you dream up.
Retrievel and display any item from anywhere in your data set for dynamic quotes, download of the month, random images, or other uses.

Corporate Big was born on '' from the need for a live userbase for a prototype internet software project being developed by a former Intel software architect who had struck out on his own.

We were created to manage the growth and maintenance for this userbase.

And when his project turns into a product, we will be its launching pad.

The zones/storages that we lease to our clientele live on his servers and exist as prototypes. This means that we have immediate access to his most cutting edge features and functionality. And so do our clients. We give our prototype users unprecedented business automation powers at a rockbottom price because of this thing that this guy invented. It lets us. And so far our clientele have been blown away by what we have done for their businesses.

He acts as a consultant on all of our projects.

What is a software architect?

Corporate Big uses an internet hub developed by Dan Coleman of Dan Coleman Designs.
With this hub, Corporate Big empowers its web clients with a very powerful and growing subset of internet facilities.
We empower you with some very sophisticated web tools that:
immediately reduce the time you spend on tedious tasks
helps you to organize
help you to collaborate
immediately connect you with new markets and opportunities
help you to sell product
all through an internet browser.
First and foremost:
We shy away from proprietary technologies so that your tools and the output from them, like a public website, are viewable on the maximum number of browsers. Flash is cool but the simple fact is it doesn't run in every browser.
Our tools generate pure html so that you can be confident that as many browsers as possible can see it what you intended in an unbroken way. Nothing says unprofessional like broken.

Soon you will be able to use our tools to generate xml, css, vcal, m3u, and ical data.

Corporate Big LLC is primarily a web design firm developed as a proving ground for the viability of an internet-based software hub being designed by Dan Coleman.

Many web designers are graphic designers who have learned to make websites using html editors like Frontpage. These folks may know how to build a good brochure, but by no means are they internet technology specialists. Unfortunately, it is hard to tell the difference.

The income for these folks usually comes from two sources, charging for the initial design of website and then charging per website update (or for x number of updates per month). Most of them barely know how to post your website, let alone make them process anything. The main problem with this business model is that no matter what the client suffers, even though they usually pay comparable compensation to top web firms. These designers can only manage a few clients because the more clients they bring on, the more time they spend updating websites.

Pretty soon these graphic designers are swamped with making website updates using clunky software, and frustrated because they don't have time to do graphic design, which is what they want, and are trained, to do.

Corporate Big currently has beta accounts for over 30 companies on our hub and we estimate our capacity both in storage and performance is currently around 100. All of these businesses and entities have come to us through the word-of-mouth generated by a service that is actually solving business problems.
Accounts on our hub are usually given out because of either an invitation or referral. An account on our hub is viewed much like the monthly maintenance charges on a condo, where you are accessed a low monthly fee. This fee is very often less than some were paying their original "webmaster."

When Wendy Levine first launched her start-up sofware company, Tova Systems, her fledging business was surviving on investment capital and didn't yet have any income or clients. The problem was that in order to get clients, Tova needed a powerful, dynamic and professional web presence but they were being quoted $20-30k by web design firms. Corporate Big was able to help Tova Systems launch a site with the services they needed for an upfront cost of less than 10% of their lowest quote!

Although all of our sites are running on beta software, our servers maintain a 99.9% availability and even as Dan improves the hub our client's sites never go down, they simply become more powerful.

And as we add more features to the hub, all accounts have access to them at no additional cost!

When one of our business clients asked us if we could connect to a costly email newsletter service, we saw that a newsletter was a feature that would benefit the majority of Corporate Big's clients and so offered to split the cost of development. Once the newsletter feature was complete, it was integrated into the hub and our clients immediately had the ability to create and email newsletters-- at no additional cost to them! Because the newsletter resides on the same hub which houses all client data, the newsletter draws existing data from each client's zone, to make populating the newsletter as simple as checking a box! (Incidentally, there are newsletter services that you can subscribe to. The cheapest we've found is $35.00 per month, and one local politician pays $450 a month for the service!).
What does a zone do for me?

We have invented a thing we call a web hub and divided it into units called zones.

Each zone is highly configurable both in size (we do it in gigabytes) and function and can accommodate powerful functions for your project or company.

With a zone, your company has immediate access to collaborative tools for schedule management, communications, resource management, and much much more.

With a zone, your project can syndicate to a list of interested parties and broadcast status updates or publish periodic newsletters.

A zone lets you store digital media in obfuscated but web accessible locations to make file exchange easier and more efficient.

A zone lets zone owners share certain resources such as zipcode lists and black lists to make them more efficient and more secure.

Zones collect historical data and allow you to analyze the effectiveness of marketing campaigns, promotions and miscellaneous press.

These are just some of the things zones allow.

Interested?

Click No way are zones this cheap and we'll show you how affordable all this power is.

Is your zone going to have a domain with a public interface?
Or in non geek speak, are you going to publish a public website?

You'll need a public interface.
And here there are lots of choices.
First. If you already have a current website and just want to connect it up to your zone we can usually connect one up for about $250 or so depending on its complexity.

If you want one from scratch we can help you match reality to your budget and our reality is pretty powerful usually for pretty cheap - (every one of our dynamic and fully automated sites have come in at less than $10k).
The flow of this site follows the eCommerce model developed for telltalescents.com. Dan just applied a new skin to that existing flow and thus was able to keep the development cost for this site really low. As an added benefit, since the site's aesthetics were based on Seth's concepts, we gave him access to the widgets and buttons so that he can replace them with his own artwork .
Designed in 2005 by Dan and Kristin, Corporate Big finally has a home on the internet.

Using our logo of the C and B that implies an electrical plug, our site intends to plug us more completely into the internet. Taking our clients along with us.

As a brochure both for us and our clients- each portfolio entry is packed with info an links spotlighting our fantastic client list.

As a index for search engines, with fully complemented link entries and link deposits designed to capture search engine attention.

As a benchmark for measuring our promotional success.

And finally as a testament to the quality of work we do!

Sites like this typically cost around $25K or so in the marketplace. Go ahead. Check it out. Get a quote for a fully automated, dynamic multiuser web system installed for your company. Corporate Big's price, about a tenth of that.

Each of our home page interfaces are 100% handcrafted. We never use code generators and are very careful with proprietary stuff like javascript and flash. We place our emphasis on portability and compatibility and straight up standard browser technologies. It is our goal to provide interfaces that can be seen on the largest amount of browsers.

The challenge with this project was to improve communication between a union, its several bargaining units, and its thousands of members-- many of whom are not experienced computer or web users. Designed in 2005 by Kristin, this Corporate Big site was built for New Orleans sax legend Reggie Houston.

Reggie's only input into the design was this: "I don't want one of those dark black websites like all the jazz cats have-- I'm like a big kid, see? I want colors a child would choose."
This site is almost exclusively HTML, but with small amounts of CSS and javascript.

Corporate big manages that community and are growing it almost weekly.

The enormity of it is currently located at Dan Coleman Designs

This has resulted in an unparalleled assortment of the coolest, high quality projects and businesses known thus far to man. At least to this (cole)man, anyway. :)

This list has developed largely via the good old fashioned and honest methods of friendly coersion, word of mouth, patience, and charity.

These sites were mostly designed from the ground up but there are a few that are examples of integrations of a preexisting design and web location. This portfolio collection is on Dan's personal website, where he used it for reference while building this system solo. He wanted to have somewhere to send the people he was inviting to be prototype users of his exciting system.

Now we are managing the growth of his portfolio.

We will be moving it to the CB public website as soon as it is functional.

Online fraud is getting more and more sophisticated every day, and because one of our friends has just fallen prey to phishing, we felt we should give all of you some information that will help you avoid falling victim to one of the countless online scams out there.

Phishing is the act of sending an e-mail to a user falsely claiming to be an established legitimate enterprise in an attempt to scam the user into surrendering private information that will be used for identity theft. The e-mail directs the user to visit a Web site where they are asked to update personal information, such as passwords and credit card, social security, and bank account numbers, that the legitimate organization already has. The Web site, however, is bogus and set up only to steal the user's information. Some of the most notorius phishing scams have involved bogus emails from eBay, Banks, and the one that our client fell for, PayPal. If you ever receive what looks like a legitimate email from any company asking for any personal information, do not reply to it, or click on any links within it. Instead, if you think it may be legitimate, open a new browser window and go directly to the company's website, and contact them through what you know is their legitimate site.

For more information, check
